The Western Orthopaedic Association Research Awards
Award Amounts:
- 1st Place: $10,000
- 2nd Place: $5,000
- 3rd Place: $2,000
Submission Process:
- Submissions open from August 11, 2024 and will close January 6th, 2025.
- Eligibility:
- Member of the WOA for at least 2 years as an “Active” member (i.e., 2 years in practice), and
- ABOS Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon
- Winners are ineligible from receiving multiple awards in a single year (including Junior Investigator)
- One submission per senior investigator.
- Prohibits applying for the Junior Investigator Award with the same paper.
- Submitted papers must:
- Highlight quality basic science, translational, or clinical research related to Orthopaedic Surgery.
- Be original work and not previously submitted to, or published in part or in whole in any journal or electronic media before presentation at the WOA Annual Meeting.
- Be blinded.
- Have a 3,000-word limit.
- Follow specific formatting guidelines.
Formatting Guidelines for Manuscripts:
- Manuscripts must be submitted as a PDF file type
- A Structured Abstract with four paragraphs: Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions (totaling no more than 325 words).
- Body includes Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Source of Funding sections.
- Reference section in PubMed/Index Medicus format.
- Figures formatting:
- Figure legends included after the References section.
- In accordance with HIPAA regulations, remove any patient identifiers (e.g., names, initials, patient numbers) and blur or crop faces so that they are not identifiable prior to submission.
- Any digital manipulation of an image—color, contrast, brightness, etc.—must be applied to the entire image figure and may not result in misrepresentation of the original image. Enhancement or alteration of part of an image, without clear and explicit disclosure in the legend, is unacceptable.
Selection Process:
- Grading will be scored on a 1 to 5 scale on the following content areas:
- Innovation
- Experimental Design including statistical analysis
- Potential clinical impact
- Quality of Discussion
